The results would, of course depend on who's voting. Here are some leads to pursue, though.

In 2008 I ranked the shows at LMA by number of downloads, which is like voting, sort of. It doesn't include commercial releases, of course. Here are the top 20:

578,854 2/15/1973 at Dane County Coliseum
505,187 6/10/1973 at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium
341,645 5/7/1977 at Boston Garden
233,481 5/15/1970 at Fillmore East
207,135 2/26/1977 at Swing Auditorium
163,251 5/8/1977 at Barton Hall, Cornell University
154,329 4/3/1987 at The Centrum
144,022 5/8/1977 at Barton Hall, Cornell University
142,905 9/4/1979 at Madison Square Garden
142,881 12/14/1971 at Hill Auditorium
112,486 5/8/1977 at Barton Hall, Cornell University
110,357 8/6/1971 at Hollywood Palladium
101,096 7/9/1995 at Soldier Field
98,046 5/9/1977 at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium
97,079 6/9/1977 at Winterland Arena
96,894 2/24/1974 at Winterland Arena
92,431 5/25/1977 at The Mosque
82,943 2/9/1973 at Roscoe Maples Pavilion, Stanford U.
82,034 11/3/1965 at Golden State Studios
79,463 10/2/1977 at Paramount Theater

In the late 1990s when Deadbase.com (http://Deadbase.com) was new, they held two online surveys. Here are the top results, collated (the last item is number of votes):

05-08-77 Cornell 47
08-27-72 Veneta 32
02-13-70 Fillmore East 26
07-08-78 Red Rocks 20
05-02-70 Binghamton 19
04-29-71 Fillmore East 19
06-28-74 Boston Garden 17
10-19-74 Winterland 13
03-01-69 Fillmore West 12
02-09-73 Stanford 12
06-18-74 Freedom Hall 12
05-26-72 Strand Lyceum 11
05-26-73 Kezar Stadium 11
05-09-77 Buffalo 11
02-18-71 Port Chester 10
04-28-71 Fillmore East 10
02-26-77 Swing Auditorium 10
05-07-77 Boston Garden 10
09-03-77 Englishtown 10
02-11-70 Fillmore East 9

You will probably also enjoy poking around here, which has similar polls not only on shows but also on individual song performances:

Search on this forum for a while and you should be able to find earlier discussions of this. I seem to recall collating people's answers and posting them at those times (but apparently I didn't save them anywhere)

I would be careful with using downloads here as a measure. What are called downloads are actually simply hits on the website and I think 3 or 4 of the top 5 on that list were featured in that "Spotlight Item" box in the upper lefthand corner of the GD homepage. Also the Barton vote seems to be split between 3 sources.

Personally I think this is kind of a silly exercise. You can't get a consensus opinion on the best show or for that matter best 10 shows from a single year and now we are supposed to figure out the best from a 30 year run? There are too many peaks in the mountain range that is the work of this band to try to figure out which one is the highest.

A few that should be on any list...10/12/68, 12/5/71, 9/27/72 and 8/1/73.

You're right about the Felt Forum 12/5/71 show. Shows move in and out of my ever-crowded iPod, but that one (SBD) never leaves.

I agree that it's fruitless to try to discover the best, or even a consensus of what a group feels is the best. But for people overwhelmed by finding 6,000 free recordings here, it provides a doorway, an entry point.

I remember very clearly feeling paralyzed by the abundance of choices and not knowing enough how to proceed. And that was five years ago, when there were only 1800 recordings here! :-)

Oh I agree that I used those lists when I first found this place almost 5 years ago. However I never believed that "most downloaded" meant best. Back then it might have been more accurate since download actually meant download and not simply view. Therefore most downloaded doesn't even mean most listened to. Regardless, I think I learned more about finding things by lurking at the forum than I did from those lists.
